What Should I Do in the Meantime?
In the time that elapses before you can reach a dentist, there are measures you can take to deal with your dental emergency.
In case of a cracked or broken tooth, remember to:
- Rinse out your mouth with clean, warm water.
- Reduce any bleeding by applying pressure to the affected area with a strip of gauze or compress for 10 minutes, or until bleeding stops.
- Relieve pain or swelling by applying an ice-pack to the face over the location of the injured tooth. Over-the-counter pain relievers can alleviate pain as well.
- If a tooth has been dislodged entirely, remember to handle the tooth as little and as gently as possible. When touching or holding the tooth, only do so by the exterior enamel; do not touch the exposed root of the tooth. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into its original socket, while keeping it in place by biting down on a strip of gauze or similar material until reaching an emergency team.
If reinserting the tooth into its socket is not doable, the next option is to try to preserve the tooth by immersing it in a glass of milk or by holding it inside your cheek. Take care not to swallow the tooth if following the latter route.
Patients should try to reach an emergency dentist within 30 minutes of the tooth having been knocked out. However, if more than 30 minutes has passed, the tooth is still potentially salvageable.
There are also measures that can be taken before reaching our office if experiencing a severe toothache. Pain can potentially be relieved by swishing and gargling with warm salt water, which can be procured by merely adding a teaspoon of salt to a glass of water. Another potential pain reliever is apple cider vinegar, which has the added advantage of killing any bacteria. A cotton ball soaked in peppermint extract or lemon extract can also relieve a toothache when held in the mouth.
