A tooth extraction is a routine and quite common dental procedure, which one may need for a variety of reasons, including:
- Irreparably broken or injured teeth
- Severe decay or infection
- Gum disease
- Crowded teeth
- Wisdom tooth removal
Do I Need Wisdom Tooth Removal?
Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common forms of surgical extraction. As a third set of molars that usually come in during one’s teens or twenties, the question of whether they should be removed will vary from one person to another. Consult our team of highly specialized dentists with any questions. Depending on the position of your teeth and on whether your wisdom teeth are fully developed or have become impacted, wisdom teeth can potentially cause many sorts of problems, including:
- Inflamed gums
- Sinus issues
- Infections and cavities
- Crowding the adjacent teeth
How Do I Know if I Need Teeth Removal?
There are patients whose tooth or teeth can be saved through alternative dental surgery, such as root canal treatment and crowns; and there are those whose teeth may need to be removed. Consult your dental specialist with any questions or concerns.
Simple vs. Surgical Removal
There are two different kinds of tooth extractions. The first, called a simple extraction, is the removal of a fully developed tooth that has grown beyond the gums; in other words, a ‘regular’ tooth. The procedure is typically performed while the patient is fully awake, and the teeth and gums are numbed using a local anesthetic. Our dentists will then loosen the tooth using a tool called a dental elevator, proceeding from there to fully remove the tooth.
The second kind of tooth removal, called a surgical extraction, refers to the removal of a tooth that remains below the gum line, such as an impacted wisdom tooth or another undeveloped adult tooth. Surgical extractions are normally performed with general anesthesia and require the dentist to make an incision in the gums through which the tooth will be removed.
What Can I Expect After a Tooth Extraction?
The rate of recovery will be different in each case. However, as a rule, simple extractions require much less recovery time than surgical extractions. Following the removal of wisdom teeth, many patients must spend days or weeks observing a special diet along with daily hygienic practices to prevent infection in the gum’s wound. Your dentist will prescribe a regimen for you that is tailored to your situation.
